Orthodontic emergencies can arise unexpectedly, and knowing how to handle them is essential to maintaining the progress of your treatment. If you experience an issue such as a loose bracket, a broken wire or any other discomfort, we encourage you to contact Cook Orthodontics at 801-523-2509 promptly. Even if you have an upcoming appointment, informing our orthodontist and team as soon as possible ensures we can address the issue effectively and minimize any disruption to your care. Dr. Michael Cook and our team are here to guide you through any temporary solutions and schedule a visit to resolve the problem.

Loose Brackets or Bands
A loose bracket or band can disrupt your treatment if left unaddressed. If this happens, please contact our office immediately to arrange for a repair. If the loose bracket is causing discomfort, you may gently remove it with sterilized nail clippers or leave it in place and secure it with orthodontic wax until your appointment. Avoid attempting permanent fixes yourself, as professional care is necessary to reattach the bracket correctly.

Poking Wires or Wire Irritations
A protruding wire can irritate your cheeks or gums, making it difficult to focus on your daily activities. To alleviate irritation, try gently moving the wire using a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire remains uncomfortable, cover the end with orthodontic wax or a small piece of cotton. For severe discomfort, you can carefully trim the wire using sterilized nail clippers. However, call our office promptly to schedule a visit and ensure proper adjustment.

Lost Separators
Losing a separator is relatively common and usually not an immediate concern. Contact our office to determine if the separator needs replacement. Depending on the timing, we may recommend replacing it during your next visit.

General Soreness and Discomfort
Mild soreness is normal after receiving braces or undergoing adjustments. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen can help alleviate discomfort. Additionally, a warm compress or heating pad can soothe jaw soreness. If discomfort persists or becomes severe, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team for assistance.

Orthodontic emergencies do not need to derail your treatment. By promptly addressing issues and contacting our office for professional care, you can ensure your journey to a perfect smile continues smoothly. We are always here to support you through every step of your treatment.
